"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, fear of getting down-sized or fired because of the plunging economy, fear of getting evicted for bad debts or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer."

- Hunter S. Thompson, "Extreme Behavior in Aspen," February 3, 2003

The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while ...

Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride..."

And we... kill those people. Ha ha "Shut him up." "We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family.

This just has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that?
And let the demons run amok

The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off but it doesn't matter because: It's just a ride.

Kingdom of FEAR it seems everyone wants to live there now days. Protected from all sorts of imaginable dangers. protected by the government and people assigned to protect us. SUCKS. My kid has a degree in science, education as well as the University of Houston can do, "Cougar High",as some call it, his wife a doctorate and they are looking for the police, all sorts of comities, groups, to protect and keep them secure. Looking for helmets on bicycles to protect them. Will not do anything with a little excitement or danger. You miss your life if you don't have excitement and danger to keep you balanced. Life is better if you have excitement, a little danger, some suspense, and a little pain that comes with it. You are feeling life and they and so many others have gotten to a point that they want to be so protected and secure they are missing the boat. You have missed allot if you get to the end of life and don't have any scars. Am I wrong?

I don't have much time to read right now (I have been two weeks on this little book) I don't have a cushy ass good job like you where a big pay check is there every month, I work for myself. "smile"

No question Hunter S was a legend--he understood the real American psyche better than all those "In Search of America" squares ever did.

Alas, he was a teensy bit self-destructive.

You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command

Love is but the song we sing,
And fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Know the dove is on the wing
And you need not know why
